Can blogs be used in public school as educational tools?

I am in a graduate program for a master's degree in education and the use of technology and part of our assignment is to create and use this blog. SO, being a blog virgin, could I receive some thoughts from regular users describing ways that they use a blog in their career in education or someone who has a good example of having seen a blog in action in education.

Any idea to me is good, I read blogs but this is my first real post.
